Woodbine Entertainment has announced the return of its acclaimed sports docuseries Free Rein, which provides an inside look into Canadian horse racing. The highly anticipated second season will debut on January 10, featuring stories of resilience and determination from some of the sport’s most prominent figures.
The first season of Free Rein earned notable accolades, including a 2024 Hashtag Sports Award for its fourth episode, The World-Class Women of Woodbine. This segment highlighted Emma-Jayne Wilson, one of the sport’s top female jockeys, and explored the inclusive environment where male and female athletes compete equally. The show’s recognition places it among prestigious finalists such as the LPGA, Fox Sports, PUMA, Clemson Athletics, and The Players’ Tribune.
Trainer Santino Di Paola emphasized the importance of such content, saying, “Creating engaging and accessible stories about horse racing helps connect younger audiences to the sport.” He expressed hope that the series will inspire more interest and appreciation for horse racing.
Building on its successful debut, Free Rein season two continues to spotlight the dedication and ambition driving its featured athletes and trainers. The series will present six new episodes, released every three weeks on YouTube.
Notable highlights include the rise of Pietro Moran, a young jockey stepping forward to follow in his father’s footsteps while crafting his own journey; Ryan and Kelsey Munger’s experience relocating from South Africa to Toronto driven by their passion for horse racing; and a behind-the-scenes perspective on King’s Plate Day, one of Canada’s most prestigious racing events.
Producer Alanna Nolan shared her enthusiasm for the new season, saying, “Horse racing requires incredible dedication and determination, and our team is proud to present these inspiring stories to our audience.”
It provides much more than that. It offers a great view of a day in the life of jockeys, trainers, and the rest of their team. The series depicts how grueling, difficult, strategic, and countless efforts are required to compete at the highest levels. From rigorous training regimens to emotional moments of triumph and setback, the show portrays the true spirit of horse racing.
The sports docuseries have built excitement on race day as well as told personal stories, making them well-loved by viewers. This is the philosophy of Woodbine Entertainment in showing these behind-the-scenes articles, to catch the eye of old and newly found fans.
