Freehold Raceway is the oldest horse racing track in the entire country and moreover, a significant point in the horse racing history of New Jersey. It has announced plans to stop all simulcast and live racing by the end of the year, with operations expected to conclude on December 28. The officials cited prolonged financial struggles as the primary reason for this significant decision.

Harness racing in Freehold Raceway started in the mid-1800s, with support from the Monmouth County Agricultural Society, founded in 1853. This society helped organize an annual fair in Freehold that included harness racing, making the venue a favorite among racing fans.

Over the years, Freehold Raceway has created countless memories for racing enthusiasts and has also benefited the community through various events. Even with its extensive history, the track has encountered considerable financial challenges. In 1984, the main building of the track was destroyed by fire, however, racing continued in temporary tents for two years until a new venue was opened in 1986.

In 1998, Freehold Raceway was acquired by a joint venture between Penn National Gaming and Greenwood Racing, the latter also owns Parx Casino and Racing in Bensalem, Pennsylvania. The current ownership is under Pennwood, with stakes held by two Pennsylvania-based racing and gaming entities, Penn Entertainment and Greenwood.

Although all racetracks were allowed to open sportsbooks after the state legalized sports betting in 2018, Freehold only launched its own in late 2020. Unfortunately, the sportsbook closed last month, indicating ongoing issues with maintaining profitability.

The closure of Freehold Raceway has been met with disappointment in the racing community. Racing fans have shared their sadness over the loss of a place that has served as a gathering place for many over the decades.

As Freehold prepares to close, it will honor its remaining 2024 racing schedule as planned. Employees will receive severance packages as part of the closure process, acknowledging their contributions to the track’s storied legacy.

Freehold Raceway’s legacy extends beyond its racing operations. It has been a training ground for numerous harness racing horses and drivers, fostering talent in the industry. Many successful trainers and drivers began their careers at this historic venue, making its closure particularly poignant for those involved in the sport.

With the last race day fast approaching, the attention of the Freehold community is left to reflect on the significance of Freehold Raceway in both horse racing and local culture. This historic venue has been part of a horse racing history in the state of New Jersey and as such, its closure marks the end of an era.

The upcoming closure of Freehold Raceway shows the difficulties traditional entertainment venues face today. Though the future of horse racing in New Jersey is uncertain, many will remember the moments spent at Freehold Raceway for years.
