Thorpedo Anna, the favorite to earn Horse of the Year honors after a successful 2024 racing time needed to undergo minor dental surgery to remove a bone fragment in her jaw. The 3-year-old Filly Anna trained by Kenny McPeek is currently taking a well-deserved break at McPeek’s farm in Lexington Kentucky. Her next scheduled race will be next year as she focuses on recovery and preparation for the Eclipse Awards on January 23, 2025.
The decision to undergo dental surgery came after Thorpedo Anna experienced a persistent sore inside her mouth following the Breeders’ Cup. Further testing revealed a small piece of dead bone that had become separated from healthy bone in her jaw. “After the Breeders’ Cup, we noticed a sore that just wouldn’t heal during her time off,” Kenny McPeek posted on his Facebook page on Sunday. “We conducted further investigation and found a small splinter of bone causing the issue. The procedure to remove it was done while she was standing, and we’re optimistic that it will no longer be a problem for her. Thorpedo Anna’s strength and cooperative nature throughout the entire process were truly remarkable.”
Thorpedo Anna is now enjoying a break and recuperating in a relaxed environment at McPeek’s farm. She will not return to horse racing until next year because of her injury. And to resume training she will join Kenny McPeek’s stable at Fair Grounds in New Orleans. The break is crucial for the filly as it allows her to heal from the dental surgery and avoid any additional strain during her recovery.
In 2024, Thorpedo Anna’s record was nothing short of stellar. Winning six of seven races including the Kentucky Oaks, Acorn Stakes, and Breeders’ Cup Distaff, Anna is the clear favorite for Horse of the Year. Her only loss came at Saratoga in the Travers Stakes, where she finished second to champion Fierceness while racing against male rivals. The challenging race tested her abilities but did not overshadow her achievements. Her season showcased remarkable talent and adaptability on the track.
Achievements of Thorpedo Anna have made her the favorite to win both Horse of the Year and Champion 3-Year-Old Filly at the Eclipse Awards and the ceremony is scheduled to be held in Miami, Florida. She will be recognized for her achievements that give her an extraordinary year. Kenny McPeek is confident that the dental surgery will not affect Thorpedo Anna’s chances, and he believes that her recovery will allow her to return to the track stronger than ever.
“Thorpedo Anna’s resilience and determination are a testament to her incredible spirit,” McPeek said. “We’re optimistic that this minor procedure will be a minor setback in her path to greater success in the future. Her talent on the track and her winning attitude make her the clear favorite for the top honors at the Eclipse Awards.”
As Thorpedo Anna continues her recovery, Kenny McPeek and her team are focused on her long-term health and readiness for a return to racing. The team will closely monitor her progress and ensure she is in peak condition before any competitive outings. With her eyes set on the prestigious Eclipse Awards, the future looks bright for Thorpedo Anna as she aims to secure a place in horse racing history.
