Inothewayurthinkin Wins Denying Galopin Des Champs Victory

Cheltenham horse race, England, March 14 (Reuters) – Inothewayurthinkin claimed victory in the Cheltenham horse race Gold Cup Winner on Friday, stopping Galopin Des Champs from securing a third consecutive win.

Trained by Gavin Cromwell and ridden by Mark Walsh, the 15/2 contender crossed the finish line six lengths ahead of 1/2 favorite Galopin Des Champs. Longshot Gentlemansgame, at 40/1, finished third.

Galopin Des Champs, trained by Willie Mullins and ridden by Paul Townend, was heavily favored to make history. After starting in sixth place, he surged ahead with two fences to go, putting himself in position for another Gold Cup winner.

“He was only just hanging in there the whole time, he was flat out,” Cromwell said. “He’s a very good horse. Going down to the second last, I thought we had a good chance. What can you say? It’s brilliant, I’m just thrilled.”

Cromwell has hinted at future ventures stating, “It’s been a great year, but we should get him home and see how we go,” concerning consideration of the Grand National.

A third Gold Cup success would have earmarked Galopin Des Champs as one of an elite group of horses, who have won the race three times or more. The legendary Golden Miller holds the record, winning five in succession from 1932 to 1936.

Townend, already a four-time Gold Cup winner jockey, had the opportunity to set a new record with a fifth win. Despite being in a strong position late in the race, he could not hold off Inothewayurthinkin’s final push.
