Trainer John Sargent is preparing Palmetto to contest the inaugural $500,000 The Lakes (1600m) at Wyong Race Club this Saturday. The race, introduced as a feature event on the New South Wales racing calendar, offers significant competition as it coincides with Magic Millions Day at the Gold Coast.

The Lakes is set to be a significant event for Central Coast racing, bringing a prestigious mile race to the region. This stand-alone meeting is anticipated to draw attention from both racing enthusiasts and top stables, including those led by Chris Waller, Bjorn Baker, and Ciaron Maher.

For John Sargent, this event offers an opportunity to extend his history of success in Horse Racing Central Coast feature miles. With previous wins in Gosford’s $500,000 The Coast, including a victory with Palmetto last year, John Sargentis aiming to add The Lakes to his accomplishments.

John Sargent has a proven track record with feature mile races in the region. He claimed the first edition of The Horse Racing Central Coast in 2021 with Brandenburg and followed up with Palmetto’s win in 2023. These achievements highlight his expertise in preparing horses for major mile events.

“The Coast was a great success for us, and now we’re looking at The Lakes as another exciting challenge,” John Sargent said. “Palmetto has shown he has the ability for these types of races.”

Initially, John Sargent had nominated both Palmetto and Perfect Thought for The Lakes. However, Perfect Thought is now expected to head to Queensland for the $2 million Magic Millions Cup (1400m).

“It looks like Palmetto will be our only runner in The Lakes, while Perfect Thought will focus on the Magic Millions,” John Sargent said. “Both horses are being placed where they can perform at their best.”

This decision underscores Sargent’s thoughtful planning, with Palmetto well-suited to the Wyong mile distance based on his prior performances.

Palmetto’s lead-up to The Lakes has been carefully managed. Solid value for money. He’s a five-year-old gelding and has made a good case for himself in terms of consistency and versatility. Thus making the race most likely easy. With the ability to take advantage of the high-pressure situations it is expected that Palmetto would be able to perform against a strong competitive field.

“He’s had a solid preparation and is in good shape,” John Sargent said. “The mile distance works well for him, and he’s ready to take on the competition.”

Boundary-finalist edition of The Lakes will feature a top field of today’s leading trainers, with heavyweights Chris Waller, Bjorn Baker, and Ciaron Maher again expected to parade well-prepared horses up the racecourse at the time of the event.

John Sargent gave way to the threat from his competitors but still showed promise for Palmetto. “It’s always tough when you’re up against these big stables, but Palmetto has shown he can handle these situations before,” he said.

The Lakes is part of a broader effort to elevate Wyong Race Club racing profile. As the stand-alone meeting coincides with the prestigious Magic Millions Day, it offers an alternative focal point for racing enthusiasts. The local officials are all excited regarding the event in the way it would draw attention to the area and create a space for very good racing.

“This is an exciting addition to the calendar, and we’re looking forward to hosting a memorable event,” Wyong Race Club’s CEO said. “It’s a great opportunity for Wyong to showcase its racing talent.”

Palmetto’s performance on Saturday will be closely watched as John Sargent seeks to add another milestone to his career. Success in The Lakes would reinforce Palmetto’s reputation as a reliable mile specialist and further highlight Sargent’s skills as a trainer.

It would be fair to say that quite a strong field has been assembled for the first running of The Lakes, and one could therefore expect the race to become pretty significant in the calendar of racing in New South Wales. For John Sargent and Palmetto, it offers a chance to achieve something truly special on the Horse Racing Central Coast.
