Season Opener Horse racing fans are in for a rare sight as Thorpedo Anna, the reigning Horse of the Year, makes her highly anticipated return to competition on March 8. On October 15 at Oaklawn Park, the 4-year-old filly is to race in the 1 1/16-mile Azeri Stakes (G2), and this will begin her journey toward what may be her first full Season Opener in ten years.
The Kenny McPeek-trained filly will face six older fillies and mares in her comeback effort. Brian Hernandez Jr. has the mount, giving her a familiar rider on the track. The race is scheduled for a 5:25 p.m. CT post time, just ahead of sunset in Hot Springs, Arkansas. Weather conditions may play a role, with a 50% chance of rain forecasted and temperatures expected to hover around 50 degrees.
Under the Azeri Stakes’ allowance conditions, Thorpedo Anna will carry 119 pounds, a reasonable figure for a seasonal debut. However, what has drawn attention is the weight distribution among the competitors. Three of her challengers—Wild Bout Hilary (124), Recharge (121), and Free Like a Girl (121)—will be carrying more weight, essentially penalized for recent strong performances.
This setup is unusual, considering Thorpedo Anna’s dominance last horse racing season. After securing the Horse of the Year title, she took a four-month break, leading up to her return in this key prep race for the Apple Blossom Handicap (G1) in April. While weight assignments are standard in racing, some observers have questioned whether the reigning champion should receive any allowance at all.
Thorpedo Anna’s competitors in the Azeri include a mix of proven veterans and rising contenders. Wild Bout Hilary (124 lbs) comes into the race with strong form, earning the highest weight assignment. Recharge (121 lbs) has been consistent and competitive, aiming to capitalize on any rust from the champion’s layoff. Free Like a Girl (121 lbs) is another seasoned runner carrying a heavier load than Thorpedo Anna. The other three competitors, though receiving less attention, remain capable of making an impact, especially if conditions favor them.
A Horse of the Year returning for a full campaign is an uncommon event. The latest athlete to put forth the attempt was California Chrome in 2015. He started his season with the second position at Santa Anita, then saw history repeat itself with a second place in the Dubai World Cup, and ended the Season Opener with a bold but unsuccessful attempt at racing in England. Hence, he was finally withdrawn from further racing before he could make a significant mark in the overseas circuit because of injury.
Thorpedo Anna’s connections, however, appear committed to keeping her focused on domestic competition. With Oaklawn Park as the starting point, all eyes will be on whether she can maintain her top form throughout 2025. If she wins decisively, expectations for her Season Opener will only grow.
The Azeri Stakes is typically a stepping stone toward the Apple Blossom Handicap in April, a race that could serve as a true test of Thorpedo Anna’s ability to dominate the older division. Beyond that, her connections will have to weigh options such as the Kentucky Oaks, the Breeders’ Cup, or even an attempt against male competition in marquee events later in the year.
Regardless of what happens on March 8, her Season Opener looks to spark a thrilling chapter in horse racing season. Fans and industry insiders alike will be closely watching to see if Thorpedo Anna can pick up where she left off and continue her winning ways in this celebrated Season Opener. With Oaklawn Park as the setting, this Season Opener could be a preamble to what could be a phenomenal year.
