Disco Time, the young horse has officially announced itself as a rising star in the world of thoroughbred racing after an eye-catching performance in Saturday’s Dwyer Stakes at Aqueduct. The three-year-old colt powerfully went on to dominate, making it clear that he would be a leading figure at the most thoroughbred racing events next year.
Disco Time, a son of Oak Crest Stables and a product of the conditioning skills of Miguel Alvarez, went into the Dwyer Stakes for a fair bit of consideration. That changed dramatically when he charged down the stretch, pulling away from a quality field with authority. The performance was not only a statement but a signal that this colt is progressing faster than expected.
Disco Time tore out of the gate under the guidance of jockey Javier Castillo and quickly calmed down after the initial burst to just behind the front runner. In the middle of the race, Castillo held his horse under control and was definitely looking for the perfect moment to make a move. Upon reaching the stretch, Disco Time accelerated considerably and left the other young horses behind with a very fluid and effortless finish, winning by a margin of almost four lengths over Iron Verdict, who finished second.
On a track that had been consistently slow for most of the day, a final time of 1:34.82 for the mile was quite solid. The thing that made the victory even more impressive was the great comfort with which Disco Time the young horse defeated the rivals. Even Castillo admitted afterward that he had plenty of horse left.
“He gave me everything I needed,” Castillo said after the race. “He relaxed early, responded perfectly when I asked, and felt like he had another gear if I needed it. This horse is learning fast and has a bright future.”
Disco Time, the young horse’s progression has been steady since his debut as a juvenile last fall. After showing promise in shorter events, he has improved with added distance and experience. His third consecutive victory was achieved on Saturday, a winning streak that has brought him from the background to the forefront, and now he is among the most talked-about horses heading into the winter training season.
Trainer Miguel Alvarez was quite pleased with the performance, however, he didn’t show much emotion in his post-race interview. “He’s developing just as we hoped,” Alvarez said. “He’s grown stronger with each start and is responding to everything we ask. We’ll give him a little rest and look toward some big spots early next year.”
Probably, such goals as the Pegasus Invitational at Gulfstream Park or the Santa Anita Handicap might be on the way. In any case, Disco Time’s team is pretty sure of his ability to go up against a more challenging group as young horse.
Oak Crest Stables, a mid-sized operation that has been building its reputation through the patient development of young horse talent, also marked a milestone with the victory. For Alvarez, who was developed in the shadows and spent years as an assistant before bravely making his own way, Disco Time is the very essence of his persistence and teamwork.
“This is what you work for,” Alvarez noted.
Owner and thoroughbred racing manager Laura Benton echoed that sentiment, describing Disco Time as a horse that “keeps finding more each race.” She added that the stable plans to take a cautious but ambitious approach with his campaign, keeping the long-term picture in mind.
The Dwyer Stakes has long been a stepping-stone for horses that target the top-tier races, and Disco Time’s showing is in line with that. Various thoroughbred racing experts and pundits have given him a lot of credit, naming him a major bright point of the whole weekend.
“He seems like a horse that is capable of both quickness as well as endurance,” stated racing analyst Martin Delgado. “The way he sped up the last part of the race was really impressive, but if I were to point out the most telling fact, it would be the calmness of the horse during the operation.”
Given his bloodline implying that he might even go further, Disco Time may be a significant young horse contender in the Woodward Stakes, the Travers Stakes, or maybe even the Breeders’ Cup of the next year. His development will determine the Circuit of his journey.
As the racing season winds down, Disco Time, the young horse, has injected new medicine for energy into the conversation about next year’s contenders. His name now sits among a small group of horses with legitimate potential to compete at the highest level.
More than just a triumph, the Dwyer win was an announcement of the arrival of a fresh talent. Supported by a well-skilled team and showing gradual improvement in each of his outings, Disco Time has become impossible to ignore. In fact, if he keeps up with this pace, the racing community could get very familiar with his name when the major races of the year take place.
Right now, people are only looking at his winter training, but it is very obvious anyway: Disco Time has evolved from a potential winner to a strong one, and the future is very bright.
