The Downs at Albuquerque, NM – September 2, 2024 — Hezgothelook Z made history on Monday, becoming the second 2-year-old Quarter Horse to achieve the coveted Triple Crown by winning the Grade 1, 440-yard All American Futurity. Traditionally the signature event of Ruidoso Downs, this year’s race was moved to The Downs at Albuquerque, where Hezgothelook Z secured a neck victory in the $3 million race, outpacing his competitors.
As the 3-5 favorite, Hezgothelook Z broke from post No. 3 with a commanding start and maintained the lead throughout the sprint, ultimately achieving a notable 99 speed index. This victory marks Hezgothelook Z as the second horse to sweep the three futurities traditionally held at Ruidoso Downs, with Special Effort being the first to do so 43 years ago in 1981.
In a thrilling finish, Hezgothelook Z, under jockey Bryan Candanosa, managed to fend off Kj Bad Moon Rising and Fdd Dreams, who finished second and third respectively. Despite Kj Bad Moon Rising’s significant challenge, Hezgothelook Z’s consistent performance secured the win. Trainer Toby Keeton celebrated his first All American Futurity victory, while Candanosa guided Hezgothelook Z to victory in a race that was full of intensity.
Hezgothelook Z, a $70,000 purchase from the Heritage Yearling Sale in Oklahoma, secured his sixth consecutive win in the All American Futurity, which was moved to The Downs at Albuquerque this year after severe flooding damaged the Ruidoso Downs track. The floods, triggered by runoff from wildfire-scorched mountains earlier in the summer, forced the relocation of the prestigious event. Despite the challenges, the 12-race series provided a much-needed lift to the racing community, demonstrating the enduring excitement and resilience of Quarter Horse racing.
